Happy Monday...
This morning I had to plan an escape route from my neighborhood, literally. As I jumped in the car to head to the office, the bright orange cones and excessive number of city employees were already gathered across the lawns and at the intersections. After avoiding a nearly head-on collision with another escapee, I made it to work only to realize I needed to go back.
Having successfully re-entered the neighborhood, driving over people’s lawns (in my non-off-roading vehicle, mind you) I was stopped short of entering my street so, I parked down the block, took off my heels and started to walk. When I finally got to my intersection, I had to jump the river of freshly laid, black, sticky asphalt, which, of course, is impossible, hence leading to my walking through the goopy mess in my WHITE heels. Needless to say, my heels are no longer white.
I continued my walk with a forced smile, since there is no need in getting mad at the city employees; they are just doing their job.
When I got back to the house, I found Lisa trapped. She had tried to escape but did not succeed leading to her in-house confinement for at least another 45 minutes.
I gathered my things as quickly as I could and ran out of the house only to find myself racing against the machine. It was 23 year-old, young female professional, mucky heels and yoga pants in-hand, versus gigantic asphalt-laying city truck.
I was literally standing a crossroads.
I had two options: (1) walk across fresh hot asphalt barefoot to get to my car and escape or (2) stand idle as the truck conquers the half of the road that remained untouched and my only path to freedom.
I stood and watched.
Of course, all the workers then felt awful for having just cut me off so, they helped me cross the black muck to get to my car.
I was the only one allowed to leave the area, a blessing and a curse I suppose. Apparently no matter how slow you drive, the goopy black tar will splatter on the bottom of your car. So, thank you kind city workers for giving us a beautiful new road and being so gracious in helping me escape, however, I think I would have rather stayed home and avoided this whole debacle.
